Utilizing agarwood by-products: A new direction for the incense production industry
VAWA - In the context of the incense production industry increasingly focusing on raw material quality and environmental friendliness, the utilization of by-products after the agarwood essential oil distillation process is opening up a noteworthy direction.

Enterprises: Optimizing raw material sources, enhancing incense quality
Speaking with reporters, a representative of Bioyersin Company stated that after the essential oil distillation process, the remaining agarwood powder still retains natural fragrance characteristics and can be used as a “base powder” in incense production.
“Unlike regular wood powder, distilled agarwood powder still emits a characteristic light fragrance when burned, without being overwhelmed by a burnt smell. This helps improve product quality, especially when blended with other types of fragrances,” the representative informed.

According to the enterprise, with a scale of about 1 million Aquilaria trees induced with agarwood using biological methods, the output of agarwood by-product powder can reach about 1,000 tons per year. This is considered an abundant source of raw materials, contributing to reducing input costs and limiting resource waste.
Experts: Need for quality standardization, avoiding “overhyping” benefits
From a professional perspective, an expert in the field of forest products and fragrances believes that utilizing by-products is a positive direction, consistent with the circular economy trend. However, it is necessary to carefully evaluate the actual quality of the agarwood powder after distillation.
“After essential oil extraction, the content of odor-creating compounds has decreased significantly. The remaining fragrance may exist, but the extent and stability need to be verified by specific standards to avoid excessive promotion,” the expert noted.
In addition, safety factors must also be prioritized. If the distillation, preservation, and grinding processes do not meet standards, they can affect the quality of incense products and even impact the health of users.
Need for information transparency, establishing standards
Based on the above reality, experts recommend that for agarwood by-product powder to stand firm in the market, enterprises need to clearly disclose production processes, quality standards, and raw material origins.
At the same time, regulatory authorities also need to have appropriate guidelines and controls to ensure transparency, avoiding the exploitation of the “agarwood” factor to create commercial advantages disproportionate to the actual value.
